Is it ever really appropriate for a man to wear a Speedo suit?

Doesn't it always look like they are smuggling bananas and gs? Why do the guys with big ol beer guts wear them anyway...sometimes you can't see the suit at all with that belly hiding it (maybe a blessing). Especially in Europe. It is traumatizing. Please explain.
