Can a canker sore cause a toothache?

recently i had a huge canker sore on the very bottom of my left cheek and as soon as it appeared my top 2nd to last molar started to hurt horribly. i went to the dentist and he recomended i see a dental surgeon (apt is not for another 2 weeks) (the tooth hurting had a root c done on it years ago) but now my canker sore is almost gone and the tooth doesnt hurt anymore...is it possible that the canker sore caused this toothache? also at the dentist he gave me some novacaine to dig around with the drill, i couldnt feel the drill but the tooth ache was still there, it was so weird. so he gave me some 5/500 vicodin and it didnt do anything : (
