Well, it is important to remember that during prohibition (U.S.) one of the strongest supporters of the institution was . . . bootleggers. I would not be surprised if many of those with a vested interest in the prohibition of other drugs are high officials who keep it going despite all of the evidence that legalizing drugs would cut down on crimes, save lives and help our budget be balanced.
