Is closeness good, or not??? ?

There's this guy I really like at school, and I am friends with him. I was wondering, though, is it better to always be hanging out with him, or should I make it seem like I am not too into him. Like right now, I pretend that I am not always looking at him or whatever, and I walk ahead of him, and don't always talk to him. But I do walk with him sometimes and talk alot and stuff, but I don't want to seem desperate. So do you think that it's better to show that I like him alot, or to wait for him to approach me? Oh yeah, and do guys like girls that are day dreamy and kind of quiet and mysteriously sad, or happy and talkative?
